Folding transversely; spindles.-In a machine for laying cloth on to a cutting-table 1, Fig. 2, the cloth-carrier runs on rails 3 and is provided with a spring-controlled cloth-guide 33 and adiustable tension bars. The cloth when in the form of a round roll is mounted on a core the ends of which are received within sleeves mounted on ball bearings carried by bearing standards 63 one of which is adjustable to the width of the fabric. When the fabric is in the form of a flat bolt A, Fig. 7, the core is replaced by tapered boards A<2>, A<3> wedging over one another and having pintles A<4>, or fabric in flat folds is placed on a platform 8. The fabric passes under and over rods 25, 21, 26 and a roller 20, the rods 25, 26 being mounted on adjustable arms to vary the tension of the cloth. The fabric then passes through a guide 33 which is adjustably pivoted to the carriage and is controlled by springs 75, 76. In use, the carriage is reciprocated along the table 1 and the piles of fabric are secured by tapered bars 74<x> which are held in place against pins 69, 72. One end of each bar is slotted to receive the corresponding pin. A gauge on the carriage is provided to indicate the position of the end of the roll of fabric to correspond to the end of the table. Paper from a roll 77 is inserted between bundles of plies to facilitate the counting of the bundles.
