Concentrating nitric acid.-Nitric acid is concentrated by treatment with water-binding nitrate such as calcium or magnesium nitrates. In the example, calcium nitrate is dehydrated by heat, partly cooled, and treated with the weak acid. On renewed heating, concentrated acid distils over. The calcium nitrate which remains is again dehydrated. It is advantageous to conduct the process by running the weak acid on to nitrate which has absorbed a considerable quantity of water, the stronger acid produced meeting nitrate containing less water, and so on.
