23,447. Harris, J. Oct. 27, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Blowpipe burners.-For producing an oxidizing blowpipe-like flame from acetylene or other gases rich in carbon, and air under pressure, an elongated mixing-tube is employed, with an enlarged chamber at the mouth, to prevent the flame from being blown away, and also to prevent back-lighting. The gas is led from a pipe 11 and passage 9 into a chamber 5, the amount being controlled by a valve 14, and the air is led from a pipe 12 and passage 10, through openings 22, a "valve" 18, and a central passage 16 in the valve 14, into the mixing-tube 5. The annular groove 21, formed on the exterior of the valve 14 to connect the central passage 16 with the air-supply inlet 10, is sufficiently long to permit of the regulation of the gas supply without affecting the air supply. The enlarged chamber 6 is formed at the end of the mixing- chamber 5, or in a nozzle-piece 7 secured thereto, and inclined openings 24 are formed through the sides of the chamber 6, as shown.
