Abstract

Variable-speed gearing.-In epicyclic changespeed gearing suitable for motor-vehicles, the driving and driven shafts a, e are in line, and a parallel spindle j, to which planet pinions h, i are secured, is carried by a casing b secured to the shaft a. A bevel-pinion k on the spindle j meshes with a pinion l on a diametral spindle m, also carried by the box b and geared to the shaft e by bevel-pinions n, o. Sun-wheels c, d, meshing with the pinions h, i, respectively, are connected to brake drums f, g which are held against rotation to bring about the intermediate and slow speeds. For the fast speed, the gear is caused to rotate solid by any ordinary means. For additional speeds, additional epicyclic trains are employed. According to the Provisional Specification, the parallel spindle may be connected directly to the driven shaft by spur gearing.
