Tyres, elastic other than pneumatic.-In tyres of the type described in Specification No. 19,334, A.D. 1905, wherein layers of leather &c. are placed side by side so as to present their outer circumferential edge as the tread, the layers being held in position by and between side flanges attached to the felloe, the layers are subjected to a lateral pressure, varying from two cwts. to one ton or more per square inch, so that all the moisture is pressed out of the leather. Pressure is applied to the layers either before they are placed on the rim, or by the flanges when the layers are in place, and is maintained during the use of the tyre so as to prevent reabsorption of moisture. Before the leather is subjected to pressure, it may be softened by soaking in water or in a solution of gum, or glue or varnish &c. The leather is held in position between a fixed flange D' and a detachable flange E, or by two detachable flanges ; outside of these flanges are placed two flanges F, F<1> removable when the tread wears down. The tyre is placed on the rim D, Fig. 2, or directly on the felloe ; or it may rest on a rubber cushion L, Fig. 4, the side flanges M, M<1> being capable of some radial movement. Metal washers may be interposed between the layers of leather. The tyre may be continuous, or it may be formed continuous and then cut into sections ; or it may be formed in sections and mounted in metal holders to be attached to the wheel. In some cases, when the tyre has been compressed sufficiently to be self-supporting, the side flanges may be dispensed with. Emery powder, metal filings, powdered flint, &c. may be distributed over the surface of the leather before the layers are subjected to pressure.
