Abstract

11,735. Dawson, H. T., and Dawson, N.A. May 19. Gas and like engines, starting, and valves and valvegear for. In a four-stroke-cycle engine, having an air cylinder in tandem with the power cylinder, as described in Specification No. 26,505, A.D. 1898, the valves of the air cylinder are worked from an adjustable cam shaft, which leaves the valves free when in its mid position, the air cylinder then pumping air either to a reservoir or to the power cylinder. In the extreme positions of the cam shaft, the air cylinder is driven as a motor for starting by air from the reservoir. Fig. 1 is a crosssection showing the valves r, s of the air cylinder b, worked by cams 2, and the air-inlet ports w. In the inoperative position of the cams 2, the valves r, s work automatically, sending air to a reservoir through a pipe u as long as the valve 14 remains closed ; when the valve is opened, the air pumped takes part in the cycle as described in the Specification above mentioned. When the air cylinder is used as a motor, the valve 14 is closed and the reservoir check valve opened. To relieve compression in the power cylinder at starting, an inlet valve e, shown on a larger scale in Figs. 3 and 4, is used, so arranged that by reason of its weight, partly balanced if desired by a spring, it does not close at low speeds. The valves r, s can be put out of action when desired by hand-nperated cams 9 working bell-cranks 11. In multi-cylinder engines, the cams are all on one shaft and may be arranged to cut out the air cylinders simultaneously or separately.
