Windows.-A casement frame, shown in Fig. 11, contains two glazed sashes 1, 2, hinged to a central stile or mullion 3 which may be rotated on pivot pins 6, 7 working in a slot 9, so as to allow the sashes to open, one outside the room and the other inside. The glazed sashes are held in place when closed by a rabbet 23, or by hinged weather strips 13, 14, and the ends of the glazed sashes and the outer frame may be filleted and channelled to exclude draught. The frames may be used as upper or lower sashes for sliding windows, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, or may be turned into a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 15, in which case the sashes are usually balanced by weights, attached by cords passing over pulleys at the top of the frame to the pivot pins 6, 7. In a modifi. cation, Fig. 13, with three sashes, instead of using a central stile or mullion, the middle sash is pivoted and the other sashes are hinged to it, so as to allow either both to swing outwards, or one outwards and the other inwards.
