Abstract

5055. Thompson, W. P., [Willson, T. L.]. March 1. Signals, marine.-In a bell buoy, the striking-mechanism is located in a closed chamber so as to avoid trouble caused by the formation of ice and rust, and in the case of submarine bells to avoid the retarding effect of the water. The end of the closed chamber D, Fig. 3, is preferably a flexible diaphragm E having a solid central portion g adapted to receive the impact of the striking-ball F and communicate it to the bell B. The other end of the chamber D is concave and lined with leather &c. to lessen the blow of the ball F. The vibratory diaphragm may be inserted between the bell and the striking means apart from the use of a closed chamber, and serves to withdraw the striking means from the bell after a blow has been struck. The bell is mounted on the buoy as shown in Fig. 1, four chambers D being placed around the bell. A submarine bell G of similar construction is also shown in Fig. 1.
