Abstract

177,428. Steven, A. May 6, 1921. Mines, marine.-Relates to apparatus of the kind comprising a net supported by buoys and having air-chambers supporting bomb-chambers from which bombs are released when the net is encountered by a submarine. According to the invention, each bomb-chamber 4, Figs. 2 and 4, contains several bombs instead of only one as heretofore; and these bombs maintain the bombchamber 4 and its air-chamber 5 at a given depth. When the bombs are dropped by the release of a catch 6 by a pull from the net 2, the air-chamber 5 rises to the surface where its position is indicated by a pointer 7 projecting above water. The net 2 is made in sections attached to pairs of air and bomb chambers hung from surface buoys, Fig. 2, or supported by horizontal chains or wires 14, Fig. 3, between the buoys 1. This Figure shows a modification in which each bomb-chamber 8 is a drum divided into sections each containing one bomb. The drum is mounted on a spindle 10 carried by the air chamber 11, and is rotated by a pull from the net which opens the sections and drops the bombs one after another so long as the pull continues.
