Mines, marine.-An arming device for submarine mines comprises a spring-loaded plate which carries a detonator and a locking device for the primer and is so constructed that when the plate is displaced by water pressure it brings the detonator into its live position and also causes the primer to fall into its live position. The primer 2 is normally supported in a guidetube 7 by a catch 11 on a rod 10. The rod is supported by a saucer-shaped plate 8 integral with a spring-urged cylinder 3 carrying the detonator 1. The plate 8 is supported by a hydrostatic diaphragm 4 which forms one side of a chamber 12. A small hole 13 in the said chamber is provided with a cap 14 normally closed by a stopper. The stopper has an opening device comprising levers 15, 16 and 17, the lever 15 being connected by a chain 20 to the mooring anchor. On the laying of the mine, the pull on the chain 20 opens the stopper and the water pressure acting on the diaphragm lifts the detonator and at the same time lifts the rod 10 to release the primer. The ignition of the mine takes place by the detonator receiving ignition by an electric current on the destruction of a lead cap or horn projecting from the mine. The hole 13 is made small in order to prevent undesired sudden movements of the detonator 1 when the mine is subjected to strong wave action.
