Abstract

Mines, marine. -Relates to fuses for bombs intended especially for use against submarines, of the kind provided with a cable to the end of which is attached a device for exploding the bomb at a depth in the water depending on the length of the cable. According to the invention, a retarding-device attached to the bomb by means of a cord or cable is adapted to trail behind when the bomb is dropped and to exert a pull on the cord when entering the water, so as to actuate the firing-mechanism. In the construction shown, the retarding-device consists of a hollow cone 5 secured to one end of a cord 4, the other end of which is attached to a spring-controlled plunger 10 in the fuse, Fig. 2. On being dropped into water, the bomb descends until the cone 5 strikes the surface, whereupon an upward pull on the cord occurs. The plunger 10, acting through a lever 15 pivoted thereto, cocks and releases a spring-actuated hammer 9, thus causing it to strike a firing-pin 8 and explode the bomb. A removable safety-pin 19 is provided. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 129,009.
