Abstract
23,489. Moir, E. W. Dec. 3. Torpedo nets and screens.-A harbour or like defence comprises a net or grid a suspended in an upright position from or near the surface of the water by a cable d and winches f, and arranged, on relaxation or withdrawal of the suspending-means, to sink and permit the authorized passage of vessels over the net. The net is preferably made partly buoyant by providing it with floats q or with buoys h, the buoys in the latter case being positively drawn down on submersion of the net. The net may carry explosive charges which may be fired by impact or on observation. Lamps, reflectors, or highly-coloured buoys may be attached to the net, their visibility indicating insufficient submersion for the safe passage of vessels.
