Abstract

117,854. Thompson, W. Aug. 9, 1917. Submarines, trapping.-Netting placed in channels &c. where submarines pass, is carried away wholly, or in part by the submarine, and is provided with signalling devices for indicating the presence of the submarine. As shown in Fig. 2, the nets a having floats a<1> preferably made of glass are attached to buoys c by ropes band shearing pins c<6> or couplings adapted to be opened under a predetermined pull. Fixed within the buoy is a cylinder of compressed air having a tap j adapted to be opened by a cord j<1> when the net is pulled away, and thereby sound a siren. A magnesium or other flare may be fitted on the buoy and operated by a cord. Buoys k having a weight attached to the cord k<1> may be arranged at intervals and also indicators g, floating on the surface but attached to the net, may be provided. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 5156/15.
