Abstract
21,849. Wirtz, L. Nov. 2. Torpedo nets.-An endless net a is mounted so that its motion through the water is in a direction opposite to that of the vessel protected. In addition, should a mine or torpedo be arrested by or explode in the moving net, a second net g may be lowered instantaneously. The net a is carried by chains running over pulleys c mounted on axles in frames k supported by the pivoted booms d. One or more of the axles may be passed inboard and be driven from within the ship. Pivoted levers q are arranged between the ship and the net a, and the bottoms of the long arms r are connected by a wire t, which is pushed back when a torpedo &c. is in the net. This causes the short arms s to operate, through ropes, a hammer mechanism which strikes a button so as to fire a cartridge in the chamber u and cause the lazy-tongs h to lower the net g, which is normally suspended in three lengths by the levers y. The lazy-tongs may be controlled by springs instead of an explosive charge. When the inner net g is fully lowered, it is supported by the chain z.
