Abstract

1933. Burnett, C. Jan. 25. Tyres, pneumatic.-Pneumatic tyres of the kind described in Specification No. 3091, A.D. 1905, in which air-tight joints are made between the sides of the tyre and the edges of a metal hoop g surrounding the felloes by bolted clamping-rings c, are formed in two parts a, a<1>. The inner part a', which is preferably cellular and made of pure rubber, has extensions which overlap the edges of the hoop g, the outer part, which is strengthened with canvas, also overlapping the hoop g. The two parts are cemented together after the outer part has been slightly vulcanized, and the compound tyre is then further vulcanized. The air cells are of any suitable shape, and are arranged circumferentially, diagonally, or in staggered relation. The tread of the tyre is formed with cup-shaped recesses h, to prevent slipping by suction action on the road. In modifications, Figs. 5 and 7, the inner part of the tyre comprises linings to continuous or cellular air spaces in the outer part and do not overlap the metal hoop g. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the edges of the tyre are clamped between rings c and a metal rim. According to the Provisional Specification, the inner part of the tyre may comprise a filling of highly resilient rubber, and tyres of the kind described may be protected by plain or corrugated hoops of hard drawn brass embedded in the treads or placed between the inner and outer parts of the tyres.
