Gas and like engines.-Two-stroke-cycle tandem engines are arranged in pairs and drive cranks set at 180 degrees or at any other convenient angle, each pair of cylinders F<1>, F<4> and F<2>, F3 being in constant communication through the cross-pipes shown in Fig. 1. Air and gas charges, which are compressed by the pumps F<5>, F<6>, are admitted to the explosion cylinders F<1>, F<3> through rings of ports f<1>, f<2> respectively, and force the combustion products from the previous explosion through the communicating cylinder F<2> or F<4>, and away through the ports f<3> and valve H. After the closing of the inlet and exhaust ports, the charge is highly compressed by the opposite movement of the pistons. Independent pumps may be used for charging. A double-acting engine is described in which a pair of long cylinders are used, a single piston operating in each cylinder. If preferred, the position of the air and gas ports may be reversed, and the valve H may be dispensed with. Specifications No. 24,994, A.D. 1896, and No. 7702, A.D. 1899, are referred to.
