Abstract

19,148. Dawson, A. T., and Buckham, G. T. Sept. 5. Ordnance breech mechanism.-Relates to a percussion firing-device with pistol grip carried in a similar manner to the usual device for electric firing. A rod C, Fig. 4, connected at one end to the firing-lever of the breech mechanism, is drawn rearwards by the recoil of the gun and carries with it, by means of the lugs b<1>, c<1>, a rod B moving in a fixed guide D<1> and connected by a flexible wire a<7> with the pistol grip A, Fig. 5. The wire a<7>, guided by a pulley a<8>, is wound on the drum a<x> in the pistol grip so that at each recoil the spindle a is rotated and a clock spring A<1> wound up. Running-down of the spring is prevented by a ratchet-wheel sear a<6> engaged by the trigger-arm a<4>. During the recoil, a lateral rib c<2> on the rod C rides over a cam d' and disengages the lugs b<1>, c<1>, but the rod B is retained by the engagement of a spring pawl d with the rack b<2>. On counter-recoiling, the rib c' rocks the pawl d and releases the rod B. When the trigger a<3> is pulled, therefore, the drum a<x> is rotated by the spring A' and the rod B, being jerked forward by the wire a<7>, strikes the lug c<1> of the rod C and actuates the firing-mechanism.
