Abstract

696,353. Cartridge feed mechanisms. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES SOC. ANON. Jan. 30, 1952 [Feb. 17, 1951], No. 2532/52. 'Class 92(ii) A cartridge magazine for an automatic firearm has a feed device 5 constantly urging the cartridges to the outlet 3, and an auxiliary feed mechanism actuated by the recoil energy developed on firing and located within the magazine near its outlet. This auxiliary feed mechanism imparts an acceleration to the cartridges b, a, during the very short time for which the leading cartridge a is to pass from the waiting position to the introduction position, the main feed mechanism 5 subsequently causing the remaining cartridges to make up for their relative lagging. When the trigger is pulled the breech-block 6 drives the cartridge a, shown in the introduction position in Fig. 1, into the cartridge chamber, and the feed device 5 moves all the cartridges until cartridge b rests on top of the breech-block-the waiting position. Such movement rotates star wheels 8a, 8b which, being keved to a tube 10 connected at 11a to a torsion bar 11 which carries a ratchet wheel 12, rotates the latter so that pawls 15, 17 engage with its teeth; the torsion bar is not twisted during this movement. On'recoil a cam 9 rotates a lever 19 carrying the pawl 17 thereby rotating the wheel 12 and stressing the torsion bar 11 which is held stressed by the pawl 15. When the breech-block has moved backwards sufficiently to clear the cartridge b the torsion bar comes into action to rotate the wheels 8a, 8b to accelerate cartridges b, c towards the magazine outlet. The bar 11 still remains slightly twisted after the movement so that it can impart a further movement to wheels 8a, 8b when the cartridge b is moved into the breech chamber. This further movement is, however, delayed slightly by a pawl and ratchet device 29, 30 to enable the next cartridge d to engage between the teeth of the star wheels. Specification 696,350 is referred to.
