Abstract

16,096. Cole, Marchent, & Morley, Morley, H. W., Dobson, A., and Ross, H. R. July 20. Compound engines; valves and valve gear; governing and regulating speed &c.-An arrangement of distributing piston valves and their operating-gear for compound vertical engines using saturated or superheated steam is shown in the Figures. The releasing-gear is combined with the governor, and an intermediate heater is used so that the boiler steam on passing to the high-pressure cylinder heats the steam passing from the high-pressure cylinder to the low-pressure cylinder. A bye-pass valve may be used to supply boiler steam direct to the high-pressure cylinder. The arrangement of the distributing-valves may be such as is described in Specification No. 13,544, A.D. 1904. In Fig. 1, a, b are the inlet and exhaust valves of the highpressure cylinder, and c, d are the inlet and exhaust valves of the low-pressure cylinder. The trip gear is shown in Fig. 4. The spindle f of the valve e has a square piece g with a die j which cooperates with a die k, inwardly pressed by a spring l carried by the sliding sleeve i. The sleeve i is operated by a rocking lever o worked by an eccentric or crank on the main shaft or a lay shaft. To the sleeve i is pivoted a governor lever m having extensions n which throw the die k out of action. In case of derangement of the dash-pot, the sleeve i comes in contact with a collar p and closes the valve. The exhaust valves are independently operated from a crank or eccentric on the engine shaft or a lay shaft, the motion being transmitted by a wrist-plate action.
