Abstract
7340. Donato, E. March 28. Road-and-rail vehicles. - Consists of a motor vehicle or traction engine, for road or rail, adapted to supply motive power for pump, dynamo, or other apparatus, or tools &c. such as used by contractors, farmers, &c. At the rear end of a rectangular frame 1, Fig. 1, is mounted an axle 3, carrying road wheels 5 outside the frame and adjustable track wheels inside. A petrol or other suitable motor at the front end of the frame drives a shaft 26 through a clutch 25, the shaft 2G driving the rear shaft 26<a>, geared to the axle 3, through change-speed and reversing gearing 58. From the front end of the motor shaft, two transverse shafts 43 are driven through clutches, one beirg shown geared to a pump 46, and the other to a dynamo on the other side of the vehicle. The front road wheels 13 run on stud shafts carried by vertically-mounted steering- brackets. The four leading track wheels 20 are carried in a bogie truck mounted on a vertical pivot depending from a transverse beam. The change-speed gear comprises a sleeve 64, Fig. 6, with three spur-wheels, keyed on the shaft 26, and the corresponding sleeve 59 slidably keyed on the shaft 26<a> and movable by means of levers 70, 72, &c. Reversal is effected by means of three idle spur-wheels of doublo width, mounted in a frame which can be moved up to the sleeves 59, 64, so as to gear together two of the spur-wheels thereon through one of the idle spur-wheels. The reversing-gear is operated by a hand-wheel 76, and the the steering-gear by a hand-wheel 75. When the vehicle is used on a track, the road wheels are removed.
