The lid d and the can e are both flanged, and linings s, a of parchment or other acid-resisting material are inserted. An india-rubber ring g is placed between the linings s, a, or two rings separating the linings from the metal are used. The contents are sterilized, producing a vacuum inside the can, and the lid is held down by atmospheric pressure, with or without any other fastening. To open the lid, a projecting tongue on part of the ring g is pulled outwards, admitting air. The lid may be closed by swaging or soldering, a ring of india-rubber being used to make a tight joint.
