Abstract

1676. Newton, P. A., [American Tobacco Co.]. Jan. 24. Cans etc.; lids and covers.-The cover A of a can or other similar containing-vessel is formed or provided with flexible metal tongues B, which are bent or seamed under the shoulder of the vessel to secure the cover in position. The tongues are preferably weakened by narrowing them at their junction with the flange D of the cover, to ensure that they will be disengaged from the shoulder when they are bent outwards to release the cover. They are also bent outwards at their lower ends C, to afford a grip for the fingers. The shoulder on the vessel may be formed in any suitable manuer, but it is preferably formed as a flattened bead, comprising downward and upward folds E, F, Fig. 3. The cover is applicable for the vacuum closing of receptacles, and, after it has been once removed, may be again employed to close the vessel. It may be used for vessels of circular or rectangular section, and for vessels made of material other than metal.
