Cans and canisters, which are hermetically closed by atmospheric pressure, in the manner described in Specification No. 1669, A.D. 1900, are tapered and shouldered at the top, and are formed with a groove c, Fig. 1, to receive a packing-ring d, so that, when the air is withdrawn from the receptacle, the flange of the cap-lid f, which is pressed down by atmospheric pressure, will make an airtight joint with the packing-ring and will be flush with the body of the receptacle. In Fig. 2, an outwardly-turned flange g on the receptacle receives a packing-ring m fitted in a groove l of a dished lid h. In Fig. 3, the flange g is turned inwards.
