Abstract

308. Hughes, R. C. Jan. 5. Sash fastenings; catches, spring.-A sash fastener for securing a window in the closed, or in a partly open, position, consists of a bolt enclosed in a casing i secured to the lower sash b, and engaging a recess e in the stile of the upper sash a when the window is closed, or engaging perforations in a brass bar attached to the stile, when the window is partly open. The bolt is acted upon by a spring h, and is provided with a knob k to facilitate its operation. The inner end has a ball c, a steel ferrule f is loosely mounted upon the part d to prevent the bolt from being cut through by means of a saw or file, and a shoulder g guides the bolt in the casing i. A projection l engages a notch m when the catch is shot, and a notch n when the catch is withdrawn, the notches being formed in a bracket o, on the flange i<1> of the casing i. A hole in an arm s registers with a hole in the bracket o, and the bow of a padlock is passed through them, to act as a further security to the fastening. A shoulder r limits the travel of the catch.
