To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, STANIsLAUs VIsNEwsKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at l/Varsaw, in the county of Wralsh and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Door- Lock, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in door-locks.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of door-locks and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive one of great strength and durability adapted to be readily operated by the proper key and capable of eiectually preventing it from being surreptitiously operated by a tool or key not constructed for operating it.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement or' parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details oil construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacriiicing any oi` the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a portion of a door provided with a lock constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation, the lock-casing being in section and the slidable bolt being shown retracted. Fig. 3 is a similar view, the slidable bolt being shown partially extended. Fig. et is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view on the line 6 6 of Fig. 2. 1 designates adoor-lock casing designed to be mounted on a door 9., at the inner face thereof, and provided at its outer edge with an extension 3, which is secured against the edge of the door, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
Vithin the upper portion of the lock-casing is arranged a spring-actuated latch 4, disposed horizontally and provided at its inner sides to iit in openings of the lock-casing. v
The latch,which is adapted to engage a keeper 7, is maintained normally in the position illustrated in full lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings by means of a spring 8, having one end secured to a stud9 and coiled around the same. The spring is provided with an arm extending outward from the coil and arranged above and engaging the latch at the outer portion thereof. The latch is provided with a handle 10, arranged approximately horizontally and provided at its inner end with ashank 11, extending downward through a slot in the top of the casing and connected with the enlarged inner end of the latch, being an integral part thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The shank of the handle is approximately L-shaped to offset the handle from the door a convenient distance for enabling it to be readily grasped by the operator. The latch is released from the keeper by depressing the handle, and this operation may be conveniently performed by the operator when his arms are full by simply pressing downward on the handle.
The handle 10 is arranged on the interior or at the inner face of the door, and the hub is provided with a rectangular opening for the reception of a spindle 12, provided at its outer end with an integral handle l3,arranged horizontally, similar to that heretofore described, and connected with the outer end of the spindle by a substantially L-shaped shank 14C. The outer end of the spindle is also providedvwith a iiange or collar 15, which fits within an annular flange 16 of an outer escutcheon-plate 17. The spindle is adapted to be varied in length by means of asection 18, provided with an intermediate squared body portion and having' opposite threaded stems 19 and 20, the inner one of which is longer than the outer and screws into a threaded bore or socket 21 of the spindle. The outer threaded stem oil the section receives a nut 22. The section is capable of adjustment by screwing the inner stem into and out of the bore or socket of the spindle to vary the length of the latter to enable the lock to be applied to doors of different thicknesses and to adapt the spindle to locks of diierent sizes. The opening of the enlarged portion or hub 5, which 1s rectangular to receive the squared portion IOO of the spindle, as clearly shown inFigs. 2and 3 of the drawings, also snugly receives the intermediate portion of the section 18, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. The nut 22, which engages the outer end of the hub or enlarged portion 5, iirmly clamps the parts together, and there is no liability of the section 18 accidentally unserewing when the parts are assembled.
rlhe lock is provided with a slidable bolt 23, having a pair of notches 24 and 25 arranged to be successively engaged by a key, whereby two revolutions or' the latter are required to complete the movement of the bolt in either direction. These notches are formed in the lower edge of the bolt in the usual manner, and the upper edge of the bolt is provided with end and intermediate notches 26, 27, and 28, adapted to be engaged by a depending tooth or portion 29 of a tumbler 30, mounted on a pivot-stud 31, and having a spring-arm 32 for holding it in engagement with the bolt. The spring-arm 32 is arranged at an acute angle to the body portion o't' the tumbler and extends upward and bears against the enlarged portion oi' the spring-actuated latch. The body portion or the tumbler is provided with a depending' approximately oval or ellipticalr arm 33, located at one side of the slidable bolt and arranged in the path of the key, whereby when the key is rotated the depending arm of the tumbler will be lifted to raise the tooth or engaging portion 29 of the tumbler out or' a notch ot' the slidable bolt. The slidable bolt is arranged within an opening' of a guide 34, and it is provided with a longitudinal slot 35, receiving a stud 36, whereby the bolt is guided in its reciproeation. The bolt is also engaged by a bowed spring 37, secured between its ends to the inner face of the removable faceplate of the lock-casing and having its arms free and engaging the slidable bolt. The lock is also provided with a curved key-guide 38, consisting of a thin substantially semicircular plate mounted on a pair of posts 39 and arched over the keyhole, as shown. The keyhole 40 is provided with an angularly-disposed approximately tJ-shaped lower portion, and the web 41 or' the key 42 is provided with an angularly-bent approximately U-shaped lower portion to lit the keyhole. rlhe web or' the key is also provided with parallel ker'fs 43, adapted to receive the curved guide and permitting the key to operate when introduced into the lock at either side. The escuteheonplate is provided with a keyhole 44 of the same shape as the keyhole of the lock-casing. The lock is provided with a tubular key-guide 46, extending through the door and projecting a short distance beyond the same to facilitate the introduction oi' the key. The bottom of the horizontal key-guide is slotted for the passage of the web of the key, and the inner end of the key-guide is provided with laterally-extending arms 47, which are interloeked with lugs or projections 48 of the lock-casing.
The keeper 7, which is constructed of metal, is provided with an angularly-bent body portion to receive the bolt, and it has a recess 49 at its upper portion to receive the latch or catch 4. Adjacent to the recess 49 the keeper is provided with an enlarged projecting portion 50, presenting an inclined or beveled face for engagement with the latch or catch for guiding the same into the recess of the keeper. The ends of the keeper are perforated for the reception of screws or other suitable fastening devices i'or securing it tothe door frame or casing.
The lock is provided at the bottom with a slidable latch 51, provided with a depending thumb-piece 52, connected with the latch 51 by a shank 53 and depending from the bottom of the lock-casing. The handle or thumbpiece is provided with a spring 54, arranged to engage the lock-casing to prevent the latch 51 'from accidentally slipping.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a lock or' the class described, the combination or' a lock-casing, a catch, a spindle provided at one end with a threaded socket, an adjustable section provided with an intermediate portion and having threaded stems, one of the stems being fitted in the socket or' the spindle, and a nut engaging the other threaded stem, substantially as described.
2. ln a lock of the class described, the combination of a casing, a latch having an exterior handle and provided with a hub having a po- IOO lygonal opening, a polygonal spindle fitting in the opening oi' the hub and having an exterior handle, said spindle being also provided with a threaded socket, an adjustable section having an intermediate polygonal portion fitting within the opening ot' the hub, said section being also provided with opposite threaded stems, one of the stems engaging the threaded socket, and a nut arranged on the other threaded stem and engaging' the hub, substantially as described.
3. In a lock of the class described, the combination of a casing, a latch provided with a hub arranged within the casing and extending through one side of the same, a spindle passing through the hub and provided at the opposite side of the casing with a shoulder, and an adjustable device engaging the spindle and the hub, substantially as described.
4.
