Description
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS QUITMAN, OF NORWALK, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,712, dated March 9, 1875; applica ion filed January 28, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS QUITMAN, of Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks;
and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a sash-holder, having a flanged plate, angular sliding plate, with a slot, a box securing the same, a rubber pad, and a cam-lever, with an extended arm, all combined with a notched Window-frame, and constructed as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a window frame and sash with my look attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front view of the same with section of the frame. Fig. 3 is a section through the line a; as, Fig. 2. Fig. 4=is a section through the line 3 3 Fig. 2.
A represents a window-frame, with sash B constructed in any of the known and usual ways. On the sash B is fastened a plate, C, havin g a flange, a, along its upper and lower edge. Between these flanges is placed a plate, D, which has a longitudinal slot, 1), and through this slot passes a screw, d, through the plate C into the sash. This screw first passes through the inner end of a curved lever, E, formed at its inner or pivoted end with a cam or eccentric, c. On the end of the plate D, nearest the window-frame, is formed a box, G, to contain a rubber block, H, which is to be pressed against the frame A. by the turning down of the lever E, when the cam 0 will bear against the edge' of the box G, so as to move the plate D with its box and rubber contained therein against the frame, thus holding the sash at whatever point the same may be placed.
WVhen the sash is lowered and it is desired to lock the same in that position without the application of the rubber block H, the lever E is turned over upward till its end h enters a notch, i, in the window-frame, thereby preventing the sash from being raised.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the flanged plate C, angular sliding plate D, having slot b, box Gr, rubber H, and cam-lever E, having projecting end h, and secured by the screw d, all used with a window-sash and a window-frame, B, having notch z, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I havehereunto set my hand this 15th day of December, 1874.
LOUIS QUITMAN. Witnesses W. H. TAYLOR, J OHN Morz.
