SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,787, dated February 3, 1885.
Application filed April 8, 1894. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT G. RooKrEL- LOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Jackson and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Gate-Latches, of which the following is a description.
Figure l is a front elevation of a gate embodying my improvement hinged to a fencepost. Figs. 2 and 3 are side and front views, respectively, of the catch. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the latch. Fig. 5 is a side view of the same. Fig. (5 is alongitudinal central view of the same, with one-half of the casing removed; and Fig. 7 is a transverse section of the cusing in the line 00 ac ot'Fig. 5.
My invention relates to improvements in gate-latches for which Letters Patent were granted to me, dated March 26, 1878, No. 201,703, and reissued December 10, 1878, No. 8,515; and it consists in the peculiar construc' tion and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
A represents the post on which the gate 0 is hung, and B the post against which it closes. The gate may be either a picket, door-panel, or other form of gate. The gate 0 is hinged to the post A by the hinges c, of peculiar construction, which hinges, however, form no part of the present application.
it represents a latch-case, mortised into the upright E of the gate 0, opposite the catch m, secured to the post B. The upright E of the gate is provided with a central mortise, for the reception of the latelrease h and a trans verse bolt-l1ole, h". The latch-case h is provided with two horizontal flanges, If, provided with screw-holes, whereby the latch-case is secured to the upright E. The latch-case h is also provided at its upper end with two opposite slots, it, provided at their lower ends with horizontal flanges 7L5, having a semicircular opening, h, in each, in which rests the pointed lower end of abolt, h secured at its upper end to a rectangular latch or bolt, h", adapted to slide back and forth in the latchcase h.
It represents a spiral spring coiled around the bolt h one end (the lower) resting against the horizontal flanges h, and the upper end of the spiral spring It bearing against a disk, h", secured to the under face of the rectangular bolt h, the tension of the spring It being always exerted to force the rectangular latch or bolt h outward. The side arms, h, of the rectangular bolt or latch h are hooked at their lower ends at h, to engage with a tumbler, n, having a square bolt-hole in line with a hole in the latchcase and the transverse bolt-hole It in the upright E, whereby the latch h is operated by a knob on said bolt. 0 represents the shank of the catch m, threaded at one end, and adapted to be inserted to any depth desired in the post B. The threaded shank 0 is provided with a circular head, F, which consists of the two opposite inclined planes 0,
provided with a central notch or, groove, P, and the transverse notches p p of each end of the groove P, and secondary notches or offsets Q at each side of the center notch, so that if the closing force should carry the latch-bolt it beyond the main notch P it will be caught by the secondary notch Q and thrown back into the main notch P. This construction of catch forms the subject-matter of a claim in my Reissue No. 8,515, dated December 10, 1878, and the present construction of catch differs from that construction in providing a circular head and the upper and lower ends of the main notch or groove P with notches p p, for a vertically-working latch to catch into.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An adjustable catch for latches, consist ing of a threaded bolt or shank, 0, double iuclined circular head F, having central groove or notch, P, provided with end notches, p p,
and secondary notches or offsets Q, substantially as specified, whereby the catch is adapted to catch and hold a vertically or horizon tally moving latch, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the slotted latchcase it, provided with flanges h, of the bolt h spring h", rectangular bolt k hooked at its lower ends, and tumbler a, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with an adjustable catch for latches, consisting ofa threaded bolt, 0, double inclined head F, having central notch, P, with end or transverse notches, p p, and secondary notches Q, of the slotted latchcase it, provided with flanges 7L5, bolth spring h, rectangular bolt h hooked at its lower end, and tumbler a, substantially asshown and de: scribed.
