Abstract

6795. Chapman, H. March 20. Annular-chamber type.-A two-cylinder rotary engine is shown in Fig. 2 as adapted for use as a compound steam engine. The cylinder A, which may be used alone as a single expansion engine, has an annular chamber 1 containing a drum 6 carrying a spiral vane 7. The spiral vane engages with a slotted revolving abutment 9 containing admission ports 11. A hand or governor controlled cut-off valve 12, preferably made of two discs pressed apart by springs, is arranged between the abutment and the inlet 14. The cylinder A is connected by a pipe C to a larger cylinder B to form a compound engine ; or, by fitting a non- return valve and sparking plug in the pipe C, the cylinder A becomes a compression cylinder and the cylinder B the working cylinder of an explosion engine. Steam may be replaced by compressed air as the motive fluid.
