Abstract

18,476. Friend, J. E. Aug. 15. Movable-abutment type with rotary abutments. Relates to a duplex i n tern al-combustion engine. In each engine, a piston 28 is carried upon a disk 24, fixed to the shaft, and travels round an annular chamber formed between the outer casing and inner circular walls 20, 21. The piston co-operates with a rotary abutment 44 which is fixed to a shaft geared to the main shaft. The gases are admitted through ports 105, 106 on either side of the abutment according to the direction of rotation. After the explosion, water is forced by a pump 128 into the chamber through a narrow nozzle 126, Fig. 6, which extends across the chamber. The gaseous fuel is drawn by a pump 60 from a pipe 62, mixed in the pump cylinder with air drawn in through the valves 67, and is then forced out into a receiver. It is admitted to the engines through one or other of the non-return valves 91, 92, Fig. 11, when the valves 84, Fig. 14, on the receiver are opened by levers operated by cams 87. The gases are ignited by sparking-plugs 113, 114, which are in series with contact-breakers 109. The piston is packed by L-shaped strips 32, 33, Fig. 20, pressed outwardly by springs. The outer strips are threaded upon pegs 42, 43 so that they are not pressed into the abutment cavity as they pass it. The abutment contact with the outer surface of the cylindrical walls 20, 21 is packed by spring-pressed strips. The pump 128 is actuated by a cam in one direction and by a spring in the other. Fig. 14 shows the distributing-valves of the receiver. The pistons 78 govern the passage of gases to the annular ports 80. Fig. 11 shows the valve-chest of one of the engines ; the direction of rotation is determined by the position of the plug valve 103, which admits the gases to one or other of the ports 105, 106. The exhaust passages are similarly controlled. Figs. 7 and 9 show the constructions of valve which are used for the inlet and exhaust valves of the pump 60.
