Abstract

892. Gill, W. A. Jan. 19. Valves; valve-gear.-The inlet and exhaust are controlled by a hollow rotary cup-shaped valve v, Figs. 3 and 4, driven at one-fourth engine speed and consisting of two or more segments pressed outwardly by springs and by the pressure of the gases, the valve being coaxial with the cylinder, and the interior forming part of the combustion chamber. One segment of a valve made in two parts is shown also in Fig. 7. The segments are held to their seats at their lower ends by a spring ring x, and at their upper ends by the conical head of a bolt 2, which also holds them up against the valve head y through the medium of a spring 7. The head y is rotated continuously from the countershaft 10 by means of gearing 9, 3, and the rotation is imparted to the valve v by projections on the head engaging slots v' in the segments. The head rotates between thrust bearings above and below a star-shaped plate 5 bolted to the engine casing. The openings v<1> in the valve are formed between the abutting edges. Two inlet openings r and two exhaust openings s are arranged on opposite sides of the engine, so that the valve uncovers each port twice in each revolution.
