Abstract
26,263. Westinghouse Brake Co., [Mason, H. R.]. Dec. 23. Brakes, pneumatic. Relates to pressure-regulating valves adapted to operate at certain predetermined pressures and applicable, in modified forms, for compressed-air brakes and as speedgoverning valves. The inlet pipe 2, Fig. 1, is connected to a chamber 1 having an outlet 3 controlled by a valve 4, which is carried by a piston 8. The piston and valve are pressed downwards by a spring 9, and the piston is faced with a flexible diaphragm 12. A bush 14 surrounds the piston, and, by means of a screwed cap 16 and a ring of studs 15, the bush can he pressed on to the diaphragm to vary the effective surface exposed to pressure and therefore the pressure at which the valve closes. Two adjustable bushings may be used. As adapted to compressed-air brake apparatus, an ordinary brake valve 48, Fig. 6, in a casing 43 is connected to a chamber 55 containing the regulating-valve 58 adapted to be opened by the stem 7 fitted with two diaphragms 63, 64. The diaphragms are backed with pistons 61 of different sizes, and either is brought into use by means of a valve-controlled passage 66, so that the charging of the train - pipe is stopped at one of two predetermined pressures.
