Abstract

777,838. Fluid-pressure servomotors; fluid-actuated valves. GARRETT CORPORATION. May 18, 1954 [June 1, 1953], No.14543/54. Class 135. A valve having a controlled operating rate and suitable for supplying a gradually increasing air pressure to an air turbine comprises a butterfly valve member 11 urged towards closure by a spring 15a and opened by pressure from the upstream side of the valve admitted by a solenoidactuated valve 20 to the lower face of a piston 15. As the main valve opens, outlet pressure becomes effective, through a conduit 22, on the upper side of a flexible diaphragm 24 to open a valve 28 and thereby reduce the pressure applied to the piston. Pressure air is admitted slowly by an adjustable restriction 25 to the lower side of the diaphragm whereby the pressures on either side of the diaphragm tend to become equalized, allowing the main valve to move gradually to its fully open position. In a modification, a piston valve replaces the valve 28 and outlet pressure, in addition to acting on the diaphragm, acts also on the upper end of the piston valve so as to regulate the main valve to maintain a constant delivery pressure.
