Abstract
13,113. Wilkinson J. July 20. Carburetting. -The object is to produce a carburetted mixture which contains an excess of air, and hence will burn without any further addition of air. The proportions of ingredients must be so regulated that the mixture will only light at an inch or two from the burner. The mixture may be used for incandescent lighting, for heating, or for motor purposes. The carburetter consists of a closed cylindrical chamber a, into one end of which enters the air admission pipe d, having a valve e and connected to an air fan driven by an electric motor. Within the carburetter is what may be roughly termed a second cylinder formed of cotton wool or other absorbent u secured in place by gauze v. Absorbent material y is also placed in the space beneath the internal cylinder. A mixture of about 3 to 6 parts of benzoline and 1 part of paraffin is charged into the carburetter through a valved tube h on to a distributing-disc s. The two liquids may be simply led by a bifurcated tube to the tube h, or be led first to a mixing-vessel from which the tube h proceeds. The carburetted mixture escapes through the valved tube f, in which a metal gauze partition t is preferably placed to prevent back-firing. The valves on the oil and air admission tubes are adjusted to obtain as nearly as possible the correct mixture. Should the amount of air be insufficient, a supply may be carried directly by the branch tube 7, having a valve 8, to the carburetter, entering above the arch of the absorbent material and near to the outlet for the gas. When using the mixture for incandescent lighting, an air pressure of about half an inch or one inch of water is used, but, when using it for heating or motive purposes, a greater pressure is adopted, the pressure being such as to cause the mixture to travel faster than the speed of propagation of the flame.
