Abstract

1329. Beck, A. E. Jan. 24. Furnace-gas engines.-Relates to the generation under pressure of combustion products for use in an engine or equivalent prime mover. A cylinder a, lined with refractory material b and provided with a sealed aperture s for use in kindling or starting the apparatus, is supplied with fuel from a hopper c<1> by means of a pocket e in a circular block d which is turned by a stem f. Superimposed slotted fuel-pupports g are arranged in the upper part of the cylinder, the apertures in the upper supports being larger than those in the lower. The two compartments of the cylinder communicate by an aperture i and the dividing partition h is provided with an ash conduit j having a cock k and a gas-tight cover l. A chamber m, formed round the cylinder a, is covered with non-conducting material and receives, through an inlet o, a forced supply of compressed air, which passes over a spiral projection n and enters the chamber a by an aperture p. According to the Provisional Specification, the air may be heated in a pipe coiled around the cylinder. To complete the combustion of the gases, a supply of water or steam under pressure, or a mixture of air and water or steam, or a further supply of compressed air, is introduced into the lower compartment of the chamber a. The further supply of air may be admitted through an adjustable aperture q, and an excess of air may be introduced to regulate the temperature of the final mixture which passes through an outlet r to the engine.
