Abstract

2565. Coxon, J. Feb. 9. Self-closing valves; lift valves; actuating valves. -A stop valve which closes automatically on the reduction of the outlet pressure, as on the bursting of a pipe, and fitted with an electrical device for closing the valve from a distance, is shown in Fig. 2. The valve C is normally pressed on to its seat by the fluid pressure from the inlet a. The valve spindle c is fitted with a non-rotatable slide E, and projects into a non-rotatable socket f on the screwed spindle F of the hand-wheel G. The hand-wheel is fitted to a sleeve g, which actuates the spindle and causes the valve to be closed against the pressure of the coiled spring D or vice versd. The inlet and outlet sides of the valve are connected by a bye-pass to facilitate its operation. When the valve is open, a fall of pressure on the outlet side causes the pressure on the inlet side to close the valve against the pressure of the coiled spring. The valve can be closed from a distance by closing an electrical circuit which includes an electromagnet I, the armature of which is connected to one end of a lever J, which is pivoted to the casing, and which has a forked arm j<1> embracing the valve spindle. In a modification, the bridge or casing supporting the spindles is replaced by pillars, and the parts are modified to correspond. The electromagnet may be replaced by a fluid-actuated piston.
