Abstract
9568. Phelps, B. May 6. Locks, key; latches.-A hand-operated latch is provided on one side with means for locking the spindle against rotation and on the other with means for opening the latch by a key independently of the spindle. The spindle E actuates the bolt F by means of a follower G acting on a yoke bar f. The knob K is fixed to the spindle E by a pin k or by other suitable means, and between a shoulder k<1> on the knob and a shoulder h<2> on the spindle bearing C is located a ring H which, when rotated by the fingers, locks the spindle to its bearing. The locking-ring H, as shown in section in Fig. 2, actuates a spring detent h<5> which is pivoted at h<4> to a ring h<1> fixed to the spindle bearing. The head of the detent passes through registering-holes c and e in the bearing C and spindle E respectively, and is advanced or withdrawn by a stud h<6> fixed to the ring H and engaging notches h<8> in the detent. When the spindle has been locked by the detent, the latch can only be opened by means of a key inserted in a pin-tumbler lock m mounted in the knob M. The barrel of the lock is secured to an angular rod n which passes freely through the follower G and is secured to a second follower L<1>, Figs. 4 and 5. Clearance holes L are made in the spindle E to give room for the movement of the follower L<1>. The knob M is made in two parts secured together by screws as shown.
