6326. Newman, W. H. March 23. Motor road vehicles, variable-speed gearing for. Referring to Fig. 3, the driving-shaft a carries two variable - throw eccentrics, and the driven shaft b two ratchet - wheels or discs, each driven b two ratchet levers, or nipping- levers worked by the eccentrics. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the driving and driven shafts are in line, and the driven shaft B carries a pinion M in gear with three wheels L, each fitted with a friction-ratchet clutch. The centre blocks J of the clutches are oscillated by means of blocks engaging pins thereon, and fitting in an undercut channel in an eccentric strap G which embraces a compound eccentric E on the driving-shaft A. By varying the throw of the eccentric, the speed of the driven shaft may be varied from zero to a maximum.
