The valve d is situated in the inlet a so that it is pressed against its seat c by the water. The passage k is put in communication with the inlet g through ports ix and d', or with the exhaust l through a D-passage d<2>, d' in the valve and ports ix and i in the casing. One end of the spindle e passes through a stuffing-box f, and the other end rests in a recess in a screw plug h. In applying the inven tion to a valve having two passages k, one for use in raising and the other for use in lowering the ram of a press, an exhaust passage passes through the centre of the valve spindle.
