Abstract

3974. Armstrong, Whitworth, & Co., Sir W. G., and Wright, R. Feb. 25. C h e c k valves.-The valve shown in the Figure is constructed for use with hydraulic cylinders to prevent the escape of water from the cylinder in the event of a fracture iu the supply pipe. The valve c is fitted with a piston c' working in a cylinder d, which is connected by a passage d<1> to the main supply pipe for the purpose of balancing the valve. A spring e is arranged to press the valve downwards, the pressure being adjusted by a cross-bar f and nuts f<1>, so as not to close the valve when the supply is at normal pressure. On the occurrence of a fracture in the pipe, or the like, the pressure under the piston c<1> is relieved, and the valve closed by the spring e. to prevent the escape of water from the cylinder on the side marked a. A screw spindle g is provided so that the valve may be used as a stop valve.
