Abstract

5203. Auld, J. March 2. Reducing-valves; piston valves.-In the reducing- valve shown in Fig. 1, for use in maintaining a uniform speed in an engine, the valve is formed with two piston parts C, G connected by a neck F, and sliding in a lining B and in the upper part of the valve-casing A respectively, as shown. In operation, the steam entering at I flows round the passage S and through the port K into the cylindrical lining over the piston C, and thence out by the passage J. The space D below the piston C is open to the space above the piston by means of a passage E, so that steam enters this space and tends to raise the valve to close and throttle the port K, this tendency being counteracted by weights or by a spring N above the valve, adjusted by a screw Q to the pressure of steam required. An exhaust outlet R is arranged in the casing round the spring N. The valve may be screwed up against the flange L of the lining B, and thereby closed, by a screw passing through the lower cover-plate M. In a modification, the lining B is dispensed with.
