Abstract

9930. Infreville, G. d'. April 20 Tyres, pneumatic.-The tyre consists of a number of hollow rings a of rubber or other extensible material, placed side by side and cemented together, to form a large hollow ring or tube, having an airtight inner chamber c into which air can be forced through the valve m. Thin strips of india - rubber are cemented over the tubes a, each piece covering three or four of the said tubes. One method of inflating is merely to force air into the inner chamber c ; another method is to provide each tube with an inwardly-opening valve e having a stem f and provided with a spring bearing on the head of the valve, so that, when compressed air is forced through the valve m into the conduit c, it enters the tubes a through the valves e. A rubber or other flexible pipe h is placed in the conduit c, and one end of this pipe is connected to the valve k, the other end being closed. To deflate the tube the valve m is first opened and then air is forced into the pipe h, which, in expanding, presses against the valve stems f and opens the valves e. If, in making the tyre, the tubes a be pressed together laterally, there is a constant tendency to press the cemented sides of the tubes together and to close up a punctured tube and its puncture.
