Abstract

9096. Braham, P. April 9. Wheels with air-compressing appliances; tyres, pneumatic.-Means for automatically retaining the air pressure in pneumatic tyres are shown. Within the air tube 1 is placed an elastic hollow lenticularshaped body 3 which communicates with the external atmosphere and with the interior of the air tube by non-return valves 7 and 4 respectively. As the wheel revolves, the end 8<b> of the pivoted lever 8 comes into contact with the ground, and in compressing the hollow body 3 forces air from it into the air tube 1. The end 8<c> next comes into contact with the ground, and by expanding the body 3 draws air into it through the valve 7. The lever 8 may be replaced by a spring placed inside the hollow body 3. In Fig. 3, the hollow body 3 is bellows-shaped and is contracted and expanded within the cylinder 9<a> by means of the pivoted lever 8, rod 11, and spring 12. Air is drawn from the atmosphere through the passages 14, and is forced into the tyre through the passage 4, each passage being controlled by a non-return valve in the form of a slit in the rubber tube 15. The elastic body 3 may be dispensed with, the air being compressed in the cylinder 9<a>. A dust-excluding cap 6<a> is employed.
