The air tube a has a recess a' in which is a flexible rubber ball l, provided with an inlet valve c communicating with the external atmosphere, and an outlet valve d leading to the air tube. A coiled spring may be inserted in the ball, to expand it after it has been compressed by contact with the ground. The ball may be replaced by a small metallic cylinder, of which the radial piston-rod is pressed against the inside of the tread.
