Abstract
5142. Worger, W. B. Feb. 25. Wheels with air-compresing appliances; tyres, pneumatic.-Tyres are automatically inflated when necessary by pumps contained in the tyres themselves or attached to the rims of the wheels. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a piston pump c is attached to the rim A. When the tyre becomes slightly deflated, the piston-rod head d<1> comes in contact with the ground once during each revolution of the wheel, so that the piston makes a stroke and air is forced through the passage E into the tyre. A safety-valve F is used to prevent over-pressure. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement by which the travel of the piston is increased by lazy-tonga. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which pairs of flexible chamber pumps H, H<1> are employed.
