Abstract

16,722. Andersen, A. C., and Andersen, L. S. March 19, [date applied for under Sec 103 of Patents &c. Act, A.D. 1883]. Wheels with air-compressing appliances.-Relates to means for inflating pneumatic tyres to a predetermined pressure by the motion of the vehicle. A partial sectional elevation through the hub u and tyre d of a wheel is shown in Fig. 1. The tyre is connected, by a tube n having a non-return valve o, to one end of a cylinder f, secured to the hub a, a hole k for the entrance of air being provided near the other end. The spring i presses the piston h outwards, so that the roller m on the end of the piston-rod g bears against a bent plate l fixed on the inner side of one fork b. Air is pumped into the tyre by the continued oscillation of the piston, and, as the air pressure increases, it forces outwards the piston-rod 12 of a spring-controlled piston, sliding in a cylinder q connected to the tyre by a tube p. The end of the piston-rod bears against a bracket 1 on a pivoted lever w, v, of one arm v has a projection y adapted to engage in a hole z in the piston-rod g and so to stop the motion of the piston h. The other arm w is held by a spring 5 either against the stop 6 or with the projection y in engagement with the hole z. When the air pressure in the tyre decreases, the piston-rod 12 moves backwards, and the end 8 engages the projections 10, whereby the pistonrod g is disengaged from the projection y. The standard air pressure in the tyre may be varied by means of an adjustable scale on the piston-rod 12.
