Tyres, pneumatic.-The inner tube a of the tyre is not made of closed circular section, but has overlapping surfaces a<3> which form an airtight joint. Sometimes a compression chamber a', of the form shown in Fig. 6, is used, and in this case the inflating-valve f<5> communicates with this chamber, which is also provided with a non-return valve d. The difference of pressure in the chambers a and a' is adjusted by means of the piece d'. The tyre is provided with strengthening-bands b and c. Fig. 6 shows the edges of the tyre connected by hooks and eyes h, h<1>. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the joint is made by the compression tubes f,f<1> tightened together by the lace f<2> and studs f<3>. Other forms of attachment are described in one of which a ring fits between meeting edges on the fastening-band and forms a joint when compressed by lacing or by screws. Such a tyre can be inflated to seek a puncture when off the wheel rim, and when a puncture is found,the tube can be opened and a patch applied to its inner surface. These tubes may be adapted for use as single-tube tyres by applying strengthening - material to their exterior.
