Abstract

9472. Candy, F. P. April 14. Tyres, pneumatic. -Relates to the form of tyre for velocipedes or other wheeled vehicles known as the "tubeless" or " single tube " tyre. The tread T of the tyre is turned inside out, and the airtight layers L, L, L of indiarubber or other suitable material are then attached so that, upon turning the tyre into the position shown in Fig. 2, the interior layers are in a state of compression and therefore tend to prevent the air from escaping when the tyre is punctured. A layer of canvas C may be inserted between the tread and the interior layers. The outer part of the tyre may be put into a concave shape instead of being turned inside out. Fig. 4 shows one way of forming an airtight joint between the tyre and the wheel rim. Rigid bands B, B encircle the rim, and the tyre end P is clamped between the rim R and band B by means of the screw D and nut N. An airtight covering A is attached to the bands B, B. Another form is shown in Fig. 6, in which endless telescopic rings B, B are fastened together by stout cross-bars E which are connected by a device which enables the rings to be reduced in diameter and thereby secure the tyre to the rim. Another device for securing the tyre to the rim is also described, in which levers are operated so as to fix the tyre against the rim. In the Provisional Specification other methods of securing the tyre are described, in one of which the edges of the tyre may form tubes or the like which are forced together by air pressure, and another is an improvement in the tyre described in Specification No. 2782, A.D. 1892, in which the edges or an edge of the tyres are moulded so as to engage when the tyre is inflated. Other somewhat similar methods of forming an airtight joint are also described. An inner tube may be provided which may be inflated when desired so as to form a double-tube tyre.
