Abstract
189,137. Holweck, F. Nov. 15, 1921, [Convention date]. R÷ntgen-ray and like apparatus.-An apparatus for producing R÷ntgen or like rays comprises a metallic vacuum tube, constructed of separable parts, mounted outside a metallic container electrically connected to the body of the tube and containing a. dielectric such as oil, and a hightension transformer submerged in the dielectric and having one of its high tension terminals connected to the body of the container and to earth, and the other terminal connected to the cathode of the tube through a portion of the tube in direct contact with the dielectric in the container. A connection is provided between the tube and a. vacuum pump. In the form shown, the tube comprises parts 8, 14 jointed at 17, and rotatably mounted at 16 in a tubular extension 7 of a metallic container 2 containing a transformer 1 submerged in oil, one terminal 3 of the high tension winding being connected to the container, which is earthed at 4. The other terminal 5 is connected to the cathode 6, which is insulated by a glass or like member 11 in contact with the oil in the container. Packed joints 12, 13 prevent ingress of oil into the vacuum tube. The anticathode 9 is cooled by water circulating through its support, and thence round the body of the tube 8 as indicated by the arrows. The walls of the tube are sufficiently thick to absorb the rays except at a part 15 closed by a thin window, pre. ferably of aluminium. A pipe 10 connects the tube with a vacuum pump.
