Abstract

Casings and supports; dynamos, cooling and ventilating.-A closed-circuit system of air circulation for cooling an electrical machine comprises a cooling chamber 5, Fig. 1, in the foundation, ducts 4 in the foundation communicating between the lower part of the chamber and openings 3b in the hollow base-plate 3 of the machine, openings 3a in the base-plate registering with openings in the central region of the machine casing 1, and an air-way 3c, shown in the plan view Fig. 2 of the base-plate and casing, at each end of the machine communicating between the chamber 5 and the inside of the casing. Passage of air from the chamber 5 to the machine casing otherwise than through the air-ways 3c is prevented by transverse webs 7, which form one wall of the ways 3c, and a plate 8 above the chamber. The air, as shown by the arrows, passes downwards through the central ducts 4 and through the chamber upwardly into the machine casing by the endways 3<c>. The chamber 5 contains coolers 6 of any suitable type and may also contain a filter.
