Abstract

188,748. Matthewman, W. Aug. 12, 1921. Gripping-devices. - Relates to a spring-grip dumb-bell of the kind in which a spring interposed between two relatively movable handles has means for varying the amount of initial compression, and consists in arranging the spring to act directly on the movable handles' without the intermediary of any moving parts. The two grips 1 are connected by bolts 2 and are separated by a spring 3 which may be assisted by other springs coiled around the bolts 2. A stud 5, which engages a seating 9 in one of the grips, passes through a hole in the spring or engages in a recess. A nut 6, which screws on the stud and may be marked with graduations 10, enables the initial compression of the spring to be adjusted to give the desired resistance to the grip. The nut may be dispensed with and the stud screwed into or out of the grip against the spring pressure. A bell may be provided to give audible warning when the full pressure is applied, or a pointer moving over a scale may be used. Coil springs may be used instead of the plate spring shown.
